The Great Fire of London

The Great Fire of London

Description

Travel back in time to the year 1666 and witness one of the most catastrophic events in British history with this dynamic and engaging workshop that is aligned with the KS1 and KS2 History curriculum. “Take Me Back to The Great Fire of London” brings the devastating blaze to life, allowing pupils to explore the causes, the chaos, and the impact of this historical event through active participation and creative expression.

Full Day

In a full-day workshop, pupils will take the knowledge they’ve gained in the morning session and transform it into a powerful performance in the afternoon. Acting as narrators, they will guide an audience—whether fellow year groups, peers, or parents and carers—back through time to explain what they’ve learned about the fire's impact, causes, and the people involved. This performance will help pupils to solidify their learning while boosting communication skills and team spirit.

Half Day

In a half-day session, pupils will dive into the history of Medieval London, learning about the narrow streets, wooden houses, and the everyday lives of the people who lived there. They will gain a deep understanding of how the fire started in a small bakery on Pudding Lane and spread across the city, fuelled by the city's flammable architecture and a series of unfortunate circumstances, including the weather. Pupils will also explore the heroic and sometimes controversial actions of key figures who helped or hindered the fire-fighting efforts, as well as the techniques used to try and control the inferno.

Craft Activity:

Alternatively, the afternoon can be dedicated to a craft activity, where pupils can use their understanding of the fire’s destruction to create something tangible. They can build 3D models of the houses that were lost in the fire, offering them a hands-on opportunity to connect with history in a creative way. These models make excellent classroom displays or memorable take-home mementos from the day.

“Take Me Back to The Great Fire of London” offers a unique, immersive experience that brings history to life through storytelling, creative drama, and hands-on learning, helping pupils to understand this pivotal event in British history and its lasting legacy.
